Codex and the Food We Eat

Animation
Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled around the world since ancient times. We might not always know where it comes from, but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality. The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade.

Uganda
Gertrude Nabukera runs a landing site on Lake Victoria, Uganda, and understands better than most the importance of standards based on the Codex Alimentarius Commission. She started out with one paddle boat, and struggled to keep going during an export ban in the 1990s. But the implementation of national standards revived the sector and now business is booming. And Gertrude has 300 fully equipped vessels and provides employment for hundreds of people.

India
Indian farmers Shravani Devi Pachar and her husband Om Prakash have probably never have heard of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. But they are leading healthier and happier lives because they decided to follow Indian organic standards derived from Codex organics guidelines. Their lives have been transformed by better yields, a healthier environment and new marketing opportunities.

Spain
National standards ensure that consumers have information about ingredients, additives and possible allergens in food. Today food label are the main tool to communicate this information. For people with food allergies access to correct information is essential.
